Ayurveda has described pregnancy diet week by week in detail various precautions to be taken during each month of pregnancy. For instance, if couple wants their baby to be a doctor or engineer, then the mother should consume almonds and read science and mathematics in the sixth month. Similarly Ayurveda has a month-wise guidelines on what to eat, wear read watch and think. This is called Garbhini-Paricharya regimen for pregnant women or antenatal care. Development of the fetus depends on the nutritious and balanced diet of the mother. Here is a detailed explanation.

Water in pregnancy

  • Expectant mothers should drink bacteria free water after boiling it for 15-20 minutes.
  • Chandan can be mixed boiling water to give it a flavour
  • Dip a 24 carat gold or silver piece while boiling to have a refined gold water for the best results.

Milk in pregnancy

  • Cow milk is the best for a pregnant woman.
  • Milk should be fresh and unadulrerated.
  • Keep milk in a silver container before consuming.
  • Milk should be lukewarm and not chilled.
  • Add dry ginger or vavding (false black pepper) if the consumption of warm milk is causing any gastric problem.(Add crushed pieces of 1mm long dry ginger in 1/4 cup warer, 2-3 seeds of vavding and boil the mixture by adding another hald cup water until the quality reduces to 1/4 cup. Filter it before drinking)
  • Asparagus added boil milk is the best for the pregnant mother.
  • Many women have an aversion to milk. But the consequences of not having milk during pregnancy, both for the mother and the child, are far- reaching. There is a possibility of the child inheriting milk-aversion

Buttermilk in pregnancy

  • Drink buttermilk regularly during pregnancy
  • Drink homemade, fresh and mild buttermilk
  • Its texture should be thinner than milk
  • Blend properly after adding water to curd. Remove all the butter before drinking it
  • Do not drink packaged, salted or sweet lassi available in the market.
  • Add cumin powder and sendha namak (Rock salt) for taste.

Butter-ghee in pregnancy

  • Prefer pure, fresh and homemade butter/ghee
  • Daily, take one or two spoon of butter/ghee with mishri (crystallized sugar)
  • Ghee made of cow milk is the best
  • Have sharpens the senses and improves intelligence, memory and reasoning power
  • Homemade ghee from cow or buffalo milk is the best
  • Use ghee in cooking daal and vegetables.
  • Add extra ghee on roti, daal-rice and other items like khichdi
  • Use pure ayurvedic ghee like Shatavaridhrut, Yastimdhudhrut with milk
  • Add 2-3 spoons of cow ghee in milk in case there are constipation issues.

Pregnancy best vegetables

  • Lentils must be past of both the morning and the evening meals
  • Green gram (mag) or split pigeon peas (toor daal) are a must-have items
  • Have soup made of a mixture of mug, Turkish gram and red lentils or peas.
  • Ear boiled, fermented pulses. Do not have it as raw salad.
  • Include a mixture of sprouted pulses in the diet
  • Avoid split black lentils (urad daal),chickpeas, blkack chickpeas, kidney beans, field bean and soybean as they are difficult to digest.
  • Have soup of sprouted pulses.
  • Eat rice, wheat and sorghum as they are easy to digest
  • Eat a year old rice
  • Have rice with mag or toor daal
  • Add pure, shatavari or yastimdhu ghee in khichdi.
  • wheat is nutritious. It provides strengh to bones and kills acidity.
  • Prepare rotli or bhakri (Indian bread) from wheat or sorghum dough using milk.
  • Try to use flour made of a mmixture of wheat, rice and various cereals as it is very nutritious.
  • Prefer home made flour
  • Millet(ragi) flour can also be added in the mixture of wheat rice and sorghum
  • Use grains that are at least one year old

A healthy pregnancy diet

  • Green leafy vegetables must be part of the daily diet of expectant mothers
  • Eat bottle gourd (dudhi), ridge gourd (turiya), sponge gourd (galka), patatoes, bitter gourd (karela), pointed gourd (parval), drumstrick, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, fenugreek, potherb leaves (randaljo), amaranth leaves (chowli), cucumber, beetroot, tomatoes, coriander and other vegetables.
  • Eat carrot, radish, cocciniagrandis (tindora), brinjal, lady’s finger, lond bean (guar)
  • Consume vegetables in the form of soup, salad or pulav.
  • Prepare a salad of cucumber, beetroot tomatoes, cabbage, coriander with lemon dressing
  • Cucumber and beetroot can be used in curd raita
  • Prepare a soup mixing seasonal vegetables
  • Try to grow or buy organic vegetables
  • Wash vegetables with warm water before use
  • Avoid comsuming purple yam (ratalu), elephant yam (suran), maize and mushrooms which is difficult to digest
  • prefer vegetable soup or juice. It is easy to digest.
  • Instead of red chilly powder and spiceis, use fresh coconut, sesame seeds, poppy seeds coriander, cumin powder to make the food tasty.
what should we eat in pregnancy
  • Use ghee or less oil to cook vegetables.
  • Keeps the use of ginger and green chillies moderate.
  • Green chuney made of coriander, coconur, sesame seeds, limon, mint, green chilies acts helps in improving digestion.
  • Have green leafy vegetable parathas and soup.
  • Minimise the use of garam masalas in preparing vegetables or curries.

pregnancy best foods and fruits

pregnancy diet is very essential in the months of pregnancy because it is very important time for every mother so you have to insure about your diet during pregnancy so that you will have a healthy baby it is also important to have a pre-pregnancy diet but sometime we are not prepare or we just not planed the pregnancy it just happen but after knowing that am pregnant it is very crucial that we have to care about our diet

  • Seasonal fruits must be part of your daily diet. Having frozen mango pu;p after its season is over is mot beneficial for health. In simple terms, eat fruits in its respective seasons.
  • Try to have at least two of these fruits daily: apple, grapes, pomegranate, Indian gooseberry (amala), orange, fig, sweet lime, ripe mangoes, coconut.
  • Drink orange and sweet lime juice without filtering.
  • If it’s grape season, have it daily. It should be thoroughly washed. Eat 10-12 raisins when grapes are unavialable.
  • Drink coconut water daily ot retain amniotic fluid (garbhodaka)
  • Cream of green coconut in preparations of vegetables, dal or chutneys
  • Ripe mango, which is heavy to digest, should be eaten judiciously. In one cup of mango pulp, add 1 tablespoon homemade ghee and fistful of dry ginger powder.
  • Avoid citric food like tamarind (aamli) and raw mangoes. Instead, you can drink lemon and garcinia indica (kokam).
  • Limit the consumption of fruits like jujube (ber) wood apple (konthu), pineapple and strawberry.
  • Do not eat imported non-seasonal fruits.
  • Moderately eat fruits like pear, guava, custard apple, annona reticulata (ramphal) , naseberry (chiku) and java plum (jamun)
  • Eat freshlu cut fruits and juice.
  • Never eat papaya during pregnancy.
  • Avoid eating fruits after sunset.
  • Avoid packeged fruit juices available in the market.
  • Ayurveda does not recommend mixing fruit and milk. you should not have milshakes.
  • Eat overnight soaked almonds in the morning.
  • You can add crystalized sugar and dry dates powder to milk.
  • Daily eat 2-3 ghee roasted dry dates
  • Regularly consume dry fig, walnut and apricot.
  • Eat cashew and pistachios in limited quantities
  • People with pitta dosha should avoid citric fruits.

Honey in pregnancy

  • Have 1-2 spoons of honey everyday
  • Make sure honey is pure and of good quality
  • Never heat honey or add it into boiling water. Honey should be added to milk
  • after it cools down to room temperature.
  • Take honey empty stomach with milk or panchmrut in the morning
  • Start daily consumption of panchmrutham with of crystallised sugar, honey and curd 2 spoons of ghee and 6-7 spoons of milk.
